What to do in San Lorenzo in Banale: a complete guide for summer and winter
San Lorenzo in Banale (now part of the municipality of San Lorenzo Dorsino) is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy: a genuine medieval village at 900 metres above sea level, nestled between the Brenta Dolomites and the terraced vineyards of Trentino. Far from mass tourism, yet rich in history, nature and distinctive flavours.
Here is everything you can do during a stay here, season by season.
Summer (June – September)
Trekking and Walking
San Lorenzo Dorsino is the gateway to the Val d’Ambiez and the Adamello Brenta Nature Park. The trails begin right at the village: within 20 minutes on foot you are already in the forest, and within 3 hours you can reach alpine refuges with views of the Dolomite towers.
For more experienced walkers, Cima Ghez (2,196 m) and Rifugio Cornisello are the most rewarding destinations. For families, the Laghetto di Nembia trail (WWF Oasis) is perfectly manageable even with young children.
Lake Molveno
Twenty minutes away by car, Lake Molveno is the jewel of the area: turquoise waters, equipped beaches, swimming, canoe and kayak hire, with the Brenta Dolomites reflected on the surface. National Geographic has rated it one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy.
Comano Spa
Just 15 minutes from San Lorenzo Dorsino, Comano Spa is renowned for its bicarbonate-calcium waters, which are particularly beneficial for the skin (eczema, psoriasis) and for relaxation. Open all year round, with a wellness area and thermal pools.
Food and Drink: the Ciuiga del Banale
Well worth seeking out: the Ciuiga del Banale, a traditional cured meat with Slow Food Presidium status, produced exclusively in this area. It is a pork and turnip cotechino with a sharp, distinctive flavour, born in the nineteenth century as a “poor man’s salume” and now a source of local gastronomic pride. You will find it in the village shops and at the annual November festival.
Cycling: Dolomiti di Brenta Bike
The Dolomiti di Brenta Bike cycling route (171 km) passes right through San Lorenzo Dorsino. Those who want to tackle just one section can hire a bike or e-bike (available on request at Casa Pariani) and ride the scenic stretch towards Lake Molveno.
Winter (December – March)
Skiing and Snowboarding at Andalo
Just 20 minutes away, the Paganella Plateau offers 50 km of ski runs across Andalo, Fai della Paganella and Molveno. The ski area is well suited to families and intermediate skiers, with an excellent ski school for children.
Snowshoeing in the Forest
Setting off directly from Masadega dei Pariani, in winter the forest takes on a magical quality. Snowshoes (available on request) allow you to explore the snow-covered trails in complete silence, all the way to the viewpoints over the Val d’Ambiez.
Ice Skating
In Andalo, the outdoor ice rink is open from December to February. A short drive from San Lorenzo Dorsino, it is a great activity for families with children.
Christmas Markets in Trento
An hour’s drive away, the Trento Christmas Markets are among the finest in Italy: an illuminated cathedral square, mulled wine and local crafts. A great afternoon outing during the Christmas holiday.
Spring and Autumn
The shoulder seasons are the best time for those who value peace and quiet. The trails are peaceful, the colours of the forest are spectacular (particularly in October with the autumn foliage), and accommodation prices are more affordable.
In November, the Sagra della Ciuiga takes place: two days of festivities in the village with tastings, music and local crafts.
